maybe not as clever as she, and the reader, sometimes thinks. With regard to the cases, most of them are easily solved by Mma Ramotswe with some creative solutions, which make them fun to read. That the cases are "short" makes sense in light of the fact that we get so much personal history about Mma Ramotswe and other characters. While there is one "case" that spans most of the book, there are in fact several smaller cases that get solved relatively quickly. The fact that there are several smaller mysteries in the book also surprised me. This also made the book a less light-hearted than I thought it would be. In this book almost the entire start of the book and significant portions throughout the book are spent on Mma Ramotswe's life and experiences, which definitely aren't cozy parts of the book. Of course the main characters need to be introduced, but based on my experience with other books in the genre (which is not extensive) you will get an introduction in the book, but the background of the main character is expanded on in subsequent part of the series. Furthermore, I was a bit surprised by how much time was spent on introducing the main characters in this first book. I thought it very much felt like a part of the story and I can appreciate how McCall Smith integrated it into the story. The book spends a fair bit of time talking about the history of the characters and places that in context of events from Botswana's history. I was mostly surprised by how much history about Botswana was woven into the story. Going into the book I mostly expected just a funny, cozy little mystery book where the main character would solve a single mystery/crime. A couple of things surprised me about the book. I have had my copy of this book for a while, but I decided to finally pick it up as I was looking for something cozy to read. Over the course of the book we learn what led up to the founding of the detective agency and we follow Mma Ramotswe as she solves several cases that are brought to her. #NO 1 LADIES DETECTIVE AGENCY BOOKS IN ORDER SERIES#It is the first book in a series that currently stands at 21 parts. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency (I'm going to get tired of typing out that whole title real quick) is a short, cozy little book about Precious Ramotswe, usually referred to as Mma Ramotswe in the book, and her detective agency.
